Finally got my PC operational again. Was hit by a virus or something that created one of those blue screen stop codes in XP. Had Microsoft help me make a second instance of Windows so I would be able to back up files instead of lose everything. Took about a week to get that done, format the hard drive and reinstall software. Still have a lot of software to reinstall, but have the basics done for now.
And already, my PC is starting to show signs of the same infection so I may be inoperational again soon. This is driving me crazy. My PC intermittently decides to reboot itself and often takes nearly an hour to start up in the mornings from all the rebooting. All the firewall, anti-virus and Windows software is up to date. Spyware programs run daily and yet nothing is detected.
Anyone having similar problems? Got a solution besides using a sledge hammer?

It sounds like you need to reformat / reinstall everything :(
Then again, you know how computer-minded I am...you should get a second opinion!
Hugs...t'chick
That's what I just spent the last week doing, with the same results. :( Even went through nearly 250 hours of download time to download all the updates for Windows and Office and McAfee.
It worked great for 3 days while I was doing all the downloading and installing. The next day after all that was finished, it started the rebooting again.
I'm ready to go back to DOS 3.0 and Windows 3.0.
Lynn, where are you? :/
Yeah, Lynn...where are you?
Had a funeral for my PC and am now using a shoebox and string for a PC. It's a very old one with Windows 98 and very little memory and a couple of dead cooling fans. I can only have it turned on for about 30 minutes at a time before I have to shut the thing down and let it cool off so I don't burn out the motherboard.
Lost all my website files on the other PC so am having a difficult time with attempts to update my website at all.
Also lost all my job search files so had to make the recreating of those files a top priority for computer time rather then being on the internet.
One of these days I hope I'll be able to afford a spiffy brand new computer.
It's 2006. How's the shoestring PC holding up, Lynn? Haven't heard from you in a while and was beginning to get worried. Are you okay?
Been thinking of you and hoping you're all right. Hugs!!
